Public consultation on the Revision of the eInvoicing Directive
The European Commission launched a public consultation on the revision of the eInvoicing Directive (2014/55/EU), open until 10 June 2026. The objective is to improve harmonisation and interoperability while reducing cross-border administrative burdens. The revision also aligned with the ViDA initiative, which will make e-invoicing mandatory for cross-border B2B transactions by 2030. GENA will contribute and we encourage all the members to also write their contribution to enhance the voice of service providers. The adoption is expected in Q4.
Submit your feedback here :link
In the meantime, the European Commission aims to better understand the practical impact of eInvoicing on businesses, including possible costs, benefits, and challenges. This is why it has launched a dedicated Questionnaire to gather feedbacks from Service Providers.
The Questionnaire is accessible here and open until April 25.

CEN Releases New Version of the European eInvoicing Standard
The European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) has officially approved the revised version of the European eInvoicing standard, now published as EN 16931-1:2026.
The update was unanimously supported by representatives from 17 Member States during the formal vote, with the remaining countries abstaining and no objections raised—highlighting strong alignment across Europe.
This revision reflects recent developments under the ViDA (VAT in the Digital Age) initiative, particularly the growing need to support e-invoicing in the context of automated VAT reporting.
The final text was released on 18 March 2026, marking the completion of the drafting process and its formal distribution to national standardisation bodies.
What’s next?
- The European Commission will publish the official reference to the new standard, along with a transition period.
- National standardisation bodies will begin the announcement and publication phases at the local level.
- CEN is also preparing a guidance document with practical examples to help businesses and implementers address more complex invoicing requirements.
This new version represents an important step forward in strengthening harmonisation and supporting the future of digital VAT compliance across Europe.
